Anthropic's Claude chatbot saw its daily user base more than double in March, according to new investment data, whilst ChatGPT's market share continues to slide. Google's Gemini is also surging, fuelled by deep integration across its product ecosystem.

The AI Chatbot Race Gets a Shake-Up

The AI assistant market is undergoing a dramatic reshuffling. New data from investment firm BNP Paribas reveals that Anthropic's Claude chatbot more than doubled its daily average user rate between February and March, reaching a record single-day high of over eleven million daily active users. Meanwhile, ChatGPT's once-dominant position continues to erode across both mobile and web platforms.

ChatGPT's Slide by the Numbers

ChatGPT's United States mobile app market share has fallen sharply, dropping from roughly sixty-nine percent in early twenty twenty-five to around forty-five percent a year later. On the web, its traffic share declined from approximately eighty-seven percent to sixty-five percent over the same period. Whilst ChatGPT still commands the largest overall user base, the gap is narrowing fast.

What's Driving Claude's Surge

Anthropic's growth has been fuelled by several factors. Paid subscriptions have more than doubled in twenty twenty-six, driven by the popularity of developer and productivity tools released in January, including Claude Code and Claude Cowork. Web visits to the Claude platform reached roughly two hundred and ninety million in February alone, up more than forty-three percent from the previous month. In the enterprise market, Claude has overtaken ChatGPT in adoption share.

Google's Distribution Powerhouse

Google's Gemini chatbot has leveraged the company's enormous distribution network to post impressive gains. It surpassed two billion monthly web visits for the first time in January and has reached seven hundred and fifty million monthly active users. Deep integration with Google Workspace has been a key driver, with nearly three-quarters of enterprise accounts accessing Gemini through Workspace applications.

What It Means for the Industry

The trend poses a strategic challenge for OpenAI as it considers a potential public offering. Analysts project ChatGPT's web traffic share will stabilise around fifty to fifty-five percent as it retains power users but loses casual visitors to free alternatives. The era of one chatbot ruling them all appears to be ending, replaced by a competitive three-way race where product quality, distribution, and trust all matter.
