A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched Northrop Grumman's Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft from Cape Canaveral on Saturday, carrying over five tonnes of scientific equipment and supplies to the International Space Station. The mission, designated NG-24, marks only the second flight of the larger Cygnus XL variant.
SpaceX Delivers Critical Supplies to the ISS
A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on Saturday morning, sending more than eleven thousand pounds of scientific equipment and supplies toward the International Space Station aboard Northrop Grumman's Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft. The rocket launched at 7:41 a.m. EDT from Space Launch Complex 40, marking Northrop Grumman's twenty-fourth commercial resupply mission to the orbiting laboratory. The mission is part of NASA's Commercial Resupply Services programme.
Delays and a Veteran Booster
The launch had been delayed twice due to forecasts of poor weather at Cape Canaveral. Originally scheduled for the eighth of April, the mission slipped first to the tenth and then to its Saturday window. The Falcon 9's first stage, flying for the seventh time, returned to Earth approximately eight minutes after liftoff and landed smoothly at a SpaceX facility at the Cape. What Is On Board
The Cygnus XL spacecraft, named the S.S. Steven Nagel in honour of the late NASA astronaut who flew four space shuttle missions and accumulated more than seven hundred and twenty hours in space, is carrying a packed manifest for the Expedition 74 crew. Highlights include a new module to advance quantum science that could improve computing technology and aid the search for dark matter, hardware designed to produce therapeutic stem cells for blood diseases and cancer, model organisms for studying the gut microbiome, and a receiver that could enhance space weather models to protect critical infrastructure such as GPS and radar.Arrival and Capture
The spacecraft is expected to arrive at the ISS on Monday the thirteenth of April. NASA astronauts Jack Hathaway and Chris Williams will use the station's Canadarm2 robotic arm to capture the freighter at approximately 12:50 p.m. EDT. Cygnus XL is scheduled to remain docked until October before departing to burn up on re-entry, disposing of thousands of pounds of waste in the process.A Growing Cargo Fleet
Saturday's flight was only the second mission for the larger Cygnus XL variant, which can carry around eleven thousand pounds compared to the roughly eight thousand pound capacity of the earlier model. The Northrop Grumman vehicle is one of four robotic cargo ships currently servicing the station, alongside Japan's HTV-X, Russia's Progress, and SpaceX's own Dragon.Published April 12, 2026 at 11:13pm
