Italy's Michelangelo Dome to Be Battle-Tested in Ukraine Before NATO Rollout

A New Shield for Europe

Italian defence company Leonardo has announced that components of its ambitious Michelangelo air defence dome will be tested in Ukraine before the end of twenty twenty six, marking the first real-world trial of a system designed to protect against everything from cheap drone swarms to hypersonic missiles.

CEO Roberto Cingolani made the announcement on the twelfth of March during a presentation of the company's updated industrial plan in Rome. The decision to test in an active conflict zone underscores the value of validating cutting-edge defence technology under live combat conditions.

How the System Works

Michelangelo is not a single weapon but a modular, open architecture that connects next-generation sensors across land, sea, air, and space with artificial intelligence driven command systems and coordinated interceptors. At its heart sits the MC five module, which transforms traditional air defence from a linear kill chain into a dynamic kill web, matching any available sensor with the best shooter in real time.

The system can protect a zone with a radius of ten to fifteen kilometres by integrating artillery, radars, and satellite data, with the network expandable depending on operational needs. Crucially, it is designed to work with existing NATO platforms and weapons from other manufacturers.

The Bigger Picture

Leonardo estimates the programme will generate roughly twenty one billion euros in new business over the next decade, with twenty countries already expressing interest. Early Ukraine testing will focus on counter-drone capabilities, with ballistic missile defence and command-and-control integration reserved for NATO trials in twenty twenty seven. By twenty twenty eight and twenty twenty nine, Guardian satellite constellations will add space-based capabilities, with full NATO and EU integration targeted by twenty thirty.
