Google has completed its largest-ever acquisition, purchasing cloud security platform Wiz for thirty-two billion dollars in cash. The deal, which took a year to clear regulatory hurdles across the US and EU, brings Wiz into Google Cloud while allowing it to continue supporting rival cloud platforms.

Google's Biggest Bet Yet

Google has officially closed its thirty-two billion dollar all-cash acquisition of Wiz, the cloud and AI security platform headquartered in New York. The deal, announced in March 2025, represents the largest acquisition in Google's history and signals a major push into cloud security.

A Rocky Road to Completion

The acquisition journey began back in 2024, when Google first approached Wiz with a twenty-three billion dollar offer that the startup rejected. Negotiations resumed in early 2025, ultimately landing at the higher price tag. The path to closing required clearing antitrust reviews in multiple jurisdictions, with the US Department of Justice ending its investigation in late 2025 and the European Union granting unconditional approval in February 2026.

Independence Within the Fold

Under the terms of the deal, Wiz will join Google Cloud but retain its own brand and continue supporting customers across Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud, and Google Cloud Platform. The company counts half of the Fortune 100 among its customers, including Shell, BMW, Morgan Stanley, and Salesforce.

Securing the AI Future

Google Cloud chief Thomas Kurian framed the acquisition as a response to evolving security challenges driven by AI adoption, describing the goal as making security a catalyst for innovation rather than a barrier. The combined entity aims to merge Wiz's cloud security capabilities with Google's AI-powered threat intelligence tools. Google has also committed one point five billion dollars in retention bonuses for Wiz's eighteen hundred employees, signalling its intent to keep the team intact.

The Bigger Picture

The deal dwarfs Google's previous largest security acquisition, the five point four billion dollar purchase of Mandiant in 2022, and underscores the growing importance of cybersecurity in the cloud and AI era.
