The Warning Shot
The CEO of memory controller maker Phison Electronics has issued one of the starkest warnings yet about the escalating global memory chip crisis. Why AI Is Eating All the Memory
The root cause is a massive reallocation of global silicon wafer capacity. Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, which collectively dominate the memory market, have pivoted their manufacturing towards high-bandwidth memory for AI data centres. The Price Shock
The knock-on effects are severe. An 8 gigabyte eMMC chip that cost around one dollar fifty in early 2025 has reportedly surged to nearly 20 dollars. DRAM and NAND flash prices are expected to rise by up to 95 percent and 60 percent respectively in early 2026. For budget devices, memory could soon account for 30 percent of total component costs, triple what it was a year ago.Industry Giants Feeling the Squeeze
Apple CEO Tim Cook has acknowledged that memory costs will weigh on iPhone margins. Lenovo's CEO warned that PC sales face mounting pressure. Chinese smartphone makers including Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo have already cut 2026 shipment targets by 15 to 20 percent. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has even floated the idea of building the company's own memory fabrication plant.No Quick Fix in Sight
Phison's internal projections suggest shortages will persist until 2030, far exceeding most analyst forecasts.
