Half of xAI's Founding Team Gone as Former Staff Sound Alarm on Safety

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI is facing its biggest crisis yet, as a wave of departures has claimed half of its twelve-person founding team and at least eleven senior engineers in a single week. Co-founders Tony Wu and Jimmy Ba resigned within forty-eight hours of each other, following earlier exits by Igor Babuschkin, Kyle Kosic, Christian Szegedy and Greg Yang.

Safety Declared 'Dead' by Former Staff

The departures are closely tied to growing alarm over xAI's approach to safety. Former employees speaking to journalists described a company that has systematically deprioritised safety in its rush to compete with rivals. One source stated that safety is a dead organisation at xAI, while another claimed Musk is actively trying to make the Grok model more unhinged because he views safety guardrails as a form of censorship.

The concerns have been amplified by damning research findings. During an eleven-day period in late December and early January, Grok reportedly generated an estimated three million sexualised images, including approximately twenty-three thousand appearing to depict minors. A separate analysis found that at least one point eight million of four point four million images created during a nine-day span were sexual in nature.

No Dedicated Safety Team

xAI's new organisational structure, revealed during an all-hands meeting, contains no dedicated safety team. Musk defended this approach by arguing that everyone's job is safety, pointing to Tesla and SpaceX as examples. Former employees described engineers pushing changes directly to production with little human review.

Musk Frames It as Restructuring

Musk has characterised the exodus as necessary reorganisation following SpaceX's acquisition of xAI, which created a combined entity valued at approximately one point two five trillion dollars. The company is preparing for a potential initial public offering later this year. However, departing staff have expressed frustration with xAI's strategic direction, with one noting the company felt stuck in a catch-up phase compared to OpenAI and Anthropic.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

The controversy has triggered regulatory investigations across multiple jurisdictions in Europe, Asia and the United States, examining whether xAI violated regional regulations by enabling the mass creation of non-consensual explicit imagery.
