Baidu has integrated OpenClaw, the viral open-source AI agent with over 145,000 GitHub stars, directly into its flagship search app. The move gives approximately 700 million monthly active users access to the Austrian-developed AI assistant, marking one of the largest consumer AI deployments in China.

Baidu's Biggest AI Play Yet

Baidu has launched OpenClaw, the open-source AI agent that has taken the developer world by storm, directly within its main search application. The integration, announced on February 14th, extends personal AI assistant capabilities to approximately 700 million monthly active users, making it one of the most significant consumer AI deployments in China to date.

From Niche Tool to Mass Market

OpenClaw, created by Austrian developer Peter Steinberger, has rapidly evolved from a weekend project into one of the fastest-growing open-source repositories in history, surging past 145,000 GitHub stars in early 2026. Previously accessible only through messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, the Baidu integration marks a dramatic shift in how everyday consumers can interact with the AI agent.

Users who opt in can now access OpenClaw through Baidu's search bar or chat interface to perform tasks including scheduling appointments, organising documents, writing code, and browsing the web autonomously. Deployment through Baidu Intelligent Cloud can be completed in under a minute.

Ecosystem Expansion and E-Commerce Push

The integration connects OpenClaw to Baidu's broader ecosystem of services. Over time, the AI agent will gain access to Baidu Search, Baidu Baike, Wenku, Netdisk, and the company's e-commerce platforms. Baidu's official e-commerce skill has already been listed on ClawHub, OpenClaw's skill marketplace, enabling capabilities such as cross-platform price comparison and reputation analysis.

Security Warnings Cast a Shadow

The rollout arrives alongside growing cybersecurity concerns. CrowdStrike has warned that misconfigured OpenClaw instances could be hijacked as AI backdoors, with researchers finding over 40,000 exposed instances online. Security firm Koi Security identified 341 malicious skills on ClawHub, including credential stealers and data exfiltration tools. Despite these risks, Baidu has pressed ahead with its launch, timed strategically ahead of China's Lunar New Year holiday as tech giants race to demonstrate returns on their AI investments.
