OpenAI Dissolves Mission Alignment Team

OpenAI has disbanded its Mission Alignment team, the internal group responsible for ensuring the company stays true to its founding principle of building artificial general intelligence that benefits humanity. The team's seven members have been transferred to other divisions within the company.

Joshua Achiam, who led the team, will transition into a newly created role as chief futurist. In a blog post, Achiam described his new mission as studying how the world will change in response to AI and beyond, helping people, scientists, and policymakers address emerging challenges early.

A Pattern of Safety Team Dissolutions

This is not the first time OpenAI has dissolved a team focused on AI safety and alignment. In May 2024, the company disbanded its Superalignment team following the departures of co-founder Ilya Sutskever and team co-leader Jan Leike. The Mission Alignment team was itself created in September 2024 as a replacement, with Achiam appointed by CEO Sam Altman to work across the company on mission-related culture and priorities.

Senior Staff Exodus

The restructuring comes amid a wave of senior departures triggered by OpenAI's increasing focus on its flagship product ChatGPT. Vice President of Research Jerry Tworek left in January after seven years, citing a desire to pursue research areas difficult to advance within the company. Model policy researcher Andrea Vallone departed for rival Anthropic, and economist Tom Cunningham suggested the company was moving away from impartial research toward commercially motivated work.

The departures followed an internal code red issued by Sam Altman in December 2025 in response to Google's Gemini 3 outperforming ChatGPT on key benchmarks.

Mounting Competitive Pressure

ChatGPT's market share among AI apps has declined sharply, falling from around sixty-nine percent in January 2025 to approximately forty-five percent in early 2026. Google's Gemini has surged to capture roughly eighteen percent of the market, while Elon Musk's Grok has grown to over fifteen percent. Chief Research Officer Mark Chen has pushed back on the narrative that long-term research is being sidelined, insisting foundational research remains central to OpenAI's mission.
