OpenAI has officially begun testing advertisements inside ChatGPT for free and Go tier users in the United States, marking the company's first move into ad-supported AI. The launch came just one day after rival Anthropic aired satirical Super Bowl commercials mocking the decision, sparking a public war of words between the two AI giants.

ChatGPT Gets Its First Ads

OpenAI has officially begun testing advertisements inside ChatGPT, rolling out sponsored content to logged-in adult users on the free tier and the eight dollar per month Go plan in the United States. The ads appear at the bottom of ChatGPT responses, clearly labelled and visually separated from AI-generated answers.

The company says ads will not influence the chatbot's responses and that user conversations will remain private from advertisers. Users under eighteen will not see ads, and conversations involving sensitive topics such as health, mental wellbeing, or politics are excluded from ad placement. Users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education tiers will remain completely ad-free.

The Super Bowl Showdown

The timing could not have been more dramatic. Just one day before the ad rollout, rival Anthropic aired multiple satirical Super Bowl commercials directly targeting OpenAI's decision. The spots featured absurd product placements interrupting AI advice, carrying the tagline "Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude."

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman responded sharply on social media, calling the Anthropic commercials "clearly dishonest" and arguing that OpenAI would "never run ads in the way Anthropic depicts them." He defended the advertising model as essential for providing free AI access to billions of users who cannot afford subscriptions.

The Business Case

OpenAI has required minimum commitments of around two hundred thousand dollars from advertisers participating in the initial test. Internal projections suggest free user monetisation could generate one billion dollars in twenty twenty six, scaling to nearly twenty five billion by twenty twenty nine. The company expects advertising to account for less than half of its revenue long term.

With infrastructure costs projected to reach into the hundreds of billions over the coming years and approximately ninety five percent of ChatGPT's eight hundred million weekly users on the free tier, advertising represents a significant untapped revenue stream. The move comes as both OpenAI and Anthropic position themselves for potential initial public offerings in twenty twenty six.
