Amazon is in advanced negotiations to invest up to fifty billion dollars in OpenAI, potentially gaining access to customised AI models designed specifically for Alexa and other Amazon products. The deal would represent one of the largest AI investments in history and could reshape the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence.

Amazon and OpenAI in Talks for Landmark Deal

Amazon is negotiating a massive investment of up to fifty billion dollars in OpenAI, according to multiple reports. The deal would form part of a broader one hundred billion dollar funding round that could value the ChatGPT maker at approximately eight hundred and thirty billion dollars.

Custom AI Models for Alexa

Beyond the investment, the two companies are discussing a commercial agreement that would see OpenAI dedicate researchers and engineers to developing customised AI models specifically tailored for Amazon's products. The primary beneficiary would be Alexa, Amazon's voice assistant, which recently rolled out its AI-enhanced Alexa+ service to all Prime members in the United States.

The customisation arrangement would allow OpenAI's models to be tuned to respond in ways that Amazon specifies, giving the company bespoke AI capabilities rather than standard off-the-shelf access.

Building on Existing Relationships

The potential deal builds upon an existing thirty-eight billion dollar cloud computing agreement signed in November 2025, which provides OpenAI access to hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs through Amazon Web Services.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are reportedly leading the negotiations directly, with a term sheet expected in the coming weeks.

Strategic Implications

The investment is notable given Amazon has already invested over eight billion dollars in Anthropic, one of OpenAI's primary competitors. By backing both companies, Amazon positions itself strategically regardless of which firm leads in frontier AI development.

For OpenAI, a substantial Amazon investment would reduce its dependence on Microsoft, which currently holds approximately twenty-seven percent of OpenAI's for-profit corporation.
