Baidu officially released Ernie 5.0, its most advanced artificial intelligence model, at a conference in Shanghai on January 22, 2026, marking a significant milestone in China's efforts to compete with Western technology giants in the global AI race. The launch triggered an immediate market response, with Baidu's Hong Kong shares surging nearly 10 percent to approximately 160 Hong Kong dollars, reaching near three-year highs.

Technical Architecture and Capabilities

The model, also known as Wenxin Big Model 5.0, features 2.4 trillion parameters and employs native full-modality unified modeling technology. Unlike most multimodal AI solutions that rely on late fusion approaches, Ernie 5.0 utilises a unified autoregressive architecture for native full-modal modeling. The system jointly trains data from text, images, video, and audio within the same framework, enabling what Baidu describes as full integration and collaborative optimisation of multi-modal features.

The model incorporates an ultra-large-scale mixture of experts structure with an activation parameter ratio of less than 3 percent. This architecture allows the system to maintain powerful capabilities while enhancing inference efficiency, activating only the relevant portions of its massive parameter base for specific tasks.

Performance and Benchmarks

Baidu claims Ernie 5.0 surpasses comparable systems from OpenAI and Alphabet, specifically citing superior performance over GPT-5-High and Gemini 2.5-Pro in reasoning and understanding capabilities. In over 40 benchmark tests, Ernie 5.0 reportedly outperformed these models, though independent evaluations are still ongoing.

The ERNIE-5.0-0110 version scored 1,460 points on LMArena's text leaderboard, landing at number 8 globally and becoming the only Chinese model to crack the platform's top 10. The model claimed the number 2 spot globally for mathematical reasoning, trailing only the unreleased GPT-5.2-High.

Market Position and User Adoption

The stock rally follows news that Baidu's Ernie AI assistant has surpassed 200 million monthly active users, making it the first domestic Chinese large model to reach this milestone. This comes amid intensifying competition among Chinese technology firms, with Alibaba's Qwen chatbot reportedly reaching 100 million monthly active users within two months of its public beta launch in November 2025.

Baidu's shares have accumulated gains exceeding 40 percent over the past two months, buoyed by investor enthusiasm over its AI initiatives and the recent filing for a Hong Kong IPO of its AI chip unit Kunlunxin.

Development and Accessibility

In the model's development, Baidu employed 835 experts from industries including technology, finance, healthcare, and education to provide guidance on knowledge, evaluation, and professional calibration. Individual users can now access Ernie 5.0 through Baidu's official app and website, while enterprises and developers can utilise it through the company's Qianfan cloud platform.

Competitive Landscape

The official release of Ernie 5.0 represents a strategic move in the escalating global AI competition. Chinese technology companies are rapidly advancing their AI capabilities, challenging the dominance of American firms in this critical sector. The success of Ernie 5.0, both in technical benchmarks and user adoption, signals that the AI landscape is becoming increasingly multipolar.

The combination of strong technical performance, massive user adoption, and positive market response positions Baidu as a formidable player in the global AI market. As the technology continues to evolve, the competition between Chinese and Western AI systems is likely to intensify, driving innovation across the industry.
