Tata Electronics Confirms Breach Exposing Apple and Tesla Files

A Major Supplier Caught in the Crosshairs

Tata Electronics, one of India's most important semiconductor and electronics manufacturers, confirmed on Monday that it had detected a cybersecurity breach after the ransomware group World Leaks published more than 200,000 files allegedly containing confidential component designs linked to two of its biggest clients: Apple and Tesla. The company plays a central role in Apple's manufacturing ecosystem in India, assembling iPhones and producing components for multiple international customers, which makes any leak of its internal data a potential headache far beyond Tata itself.

The Scope of the Breach

The stolen data reportedly totals more than 630 gigabytes and spans over 200,000 files. According to Reuters and security researchers who reviewed the material, it includes what appear to be Apple supplier specifications, Tesla manufacturing documents, Outlook email conversations, SAP-related information, event logs spanning several years, and passport copies of employees, including foreign nationals. TechCrunch independently reviewed a sample of the files and found what appeared to be Apple supplier specifications and Tesla manufacturing documents.

Some of the purported Apple folders carried titles such as "com.apple.factorydata" and referenced "material specification". On the Tesla side, one folder was labelled "NV36 Chargeport Controller - North America", a purported reference to parts used in an upgraded Model Y, while another 2023 document marked "TRADE SECRET" reportedly showed drawings for Tesla's "project Highland", the internal codename for its revamped Model 3.

Company and Client Response

"A few weeks ago, Tata Electronics identified a cybersecurity incident on some of our systems. Our response protocols were deployed immediately, and the incident has had no impact on our operations across businesses, which remain unaffected," the company said in a statement to Reuters. Tata reportedly informed some employees at its iPhone assembly operations about the breach last week, and a ransom demand has been made. Apple is said to be investigating its exposure, with a full analysis underway.

Who Is World Leaks?

World Leaks first claimed responsibility for the attack on 10 June, threatening to release the data unless negotiations began. The group is a successor to Hunters International, which rebranded away from file-encrypting ransomware in early 2025, and has claimed over 142 victims across both identities. It is worth noting that Tata Electronics is a distinct entity from Tata Technologies, which was previously breached by the same group.

When a single supplier holds blueprints for products made by multiple multinational giants, one breach can ripple outward to expose trade secrets across an entire industry.
