Apple Unveils iOS 27 at WWDC 2026, Prioritising Speed Over New Features

A Performance-First Pivot

Apple used its Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on Monday to unveil iOS 27, marking a notable shift in strategy. Rather than leading with headline-grabbing features, the company put performance and software quality front and centre. Apple claimed that iPhone and iPad apps will launch up to 30% faster, AirDrop transfers will be up to 80% faster, and photos will load up to 70% more quickly. The company also touted improvements to its CPU schedulers, designed to boost multitasking performance across the system.

This emphasis aligns with reporting from late 2025, when Bloomberg's Mark Gurman wrote that Apple was taking a step back from launching major new software features to prioritise performance and stability. It is the company's most concerted effort in that direction since iOS 12 back in 2018, an update fondly remembered for breathing new life into ageing hardware.

Liquid Glass Gets User Controls

Last year's translucent Liquid Glass design proved divisive among users. Rather than retreat, Apple offered a compromise: a system-wide transparency slider that lets users dial back or accentuate the glassy elements across the entire interface. The feature expands on a more limited slider introduced in iOS 26.2, which only affected the Lock Screen clock. Apple also introduced a new layered approach to Liquid Glass within app icons, responding directly to criticism that the redesign hurt icon clarity.

Broadest Device Support Ever

In a move that surprised many observers, Apple confirmed that iOS 27 will be compatible with every device from the iPhone 11 onwards, calling it available to more users than any iOS release ever. Pre-release rumours had widely predicted that the iPhone 11 and its A13 chip would be dropped. Instead, Apple matched the compatibility range of iOS 26 whilst layering its performance improvements on top. A developer beta became available immediately following the keynote, with a public beta expected in July and a full release scheduled for September.

A Milestone Moment

The keynote also carried historic weight. It was Tim Cook's final WWDC as chief executive before he hands the role to hardware engineering chief John Ternus on 1 September, closing a defining chapter in Apple's leadership.
