The headline number breaks down into three buckets. Sales of physical goods and services accounted for roughly $1.1 trillion, digital goods and services billings reached $149 billion, and in-app advertising contributed $151 billion. The ecosystem has nearly tripled in size since 2019, with billings and sales more than doubling in China over the past six years and tripling across the United States and Europe.

Apple's App Store Crosses a Record $1.4 Trillion
Apple announced on Wednesday that its global App Store ecosystem facilitated more than $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2025, the platform's largest annual total to date. The figure, drawn from a new study by economists at Analysis Group, lands just days before Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, which begins on 8 June 2026.The headline number breaks down into three buckets.
AI-Powered Apps Drive the Growth
The most striking finding is how fast artificial intelligence is reshaping the charts. Apps featuring consumer-facing AI grew their billings four times faster than other apps among the top 100, and 40 of those top 100 apps now incorporate some form of consumer-facing AI. It is a clear signal that AI has moved from novelty to a core driver of app revenue."Developers are the lifeblood of the App Store, and this year's remarkable achievement highlights their limitless creativity," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement, adding that the company is dedicated to equipping developers with the tools and platforms to innovate.
The Commission-Free Caveat
Apple emphasised that more than 90% of the billings and sales were commission-free, totalling roughly $1.437 trillion on which developers paid Apple nothing. That is because categories like physical goods on Amazon, food delivery orders, and in-app advertising from services like TikTok and Instagram fall outside Apple's commission structure. Critics note the framing conveniently bundles in revenue Apple never touches, even as regulators scrutinise its cut on digital purchases.Regional Patterns and What Comes Next
Spending varied by region. In the US, Europe, Japan, and Brazil, travel ranked as the second-largest physical goods category, while in Korea food delivery took that spot. Apple welcomed thousands of developers to its developer centres in 2025 and plans to open a new Developer Centre in Berlin in 2026. All eyes now turn to WWDC 2026, where Apple is expected to unveil new tools for its next operating system lineup.Published June 5, 2026 at 2:20am
